Lenswood and Forest Range CFS

The bushfire season is approaching and now is the time to start your preparations.

HIGH PRIORITY. Please be aware that any fire emergency calls must and can only be directed through the triple 000 number. The station phone number when it is manned can be reached on 8389 8002 only for enquiries.

School

The Lenswood School is to celebrate 140 years of education in the district on Sunday the 22nd of November. No doubt things were much more rudimentary in those days, but the school has served the community well over the years. Planning is now ongoing and publicity about the event will occur shortly. Over the years school concerts have featured prominently.

My mother who is now 104, remembers fondly the concerts they had in the old Mission Hall (now Toad Hall). The concert held last week was absolutely fantastic and a credit to all. Special mention should be made to Darly Maher and her assistants for the production and the 94 students, (too many to single out), who performed so magnificently in "Journey through the Pages".

Workplace Regulations

The horticultural industries of Australia have been greatly concerned at the new Workplace Regulations to be enacted at the start of 2010. Deputy Prime Minister Ms. Gillard, after severe lobbying, has used her discretionary powers to recognize more flexible working hours and piece rates. Our industry finds this very welcome news and while this is not the end of the matter, it is hopeful of a more practical outcome. It should be noted that this is not about paying people less.

Major News

Most folk in the Lenswood and Forest Range community would now be aware that the pack houses of Joysons, Plummers Border Valley and Hillview Fruits have combined with the Lenswood Co-operative in a packing and marketing venture.  Effectively this will double the output of the one pack house which will in turn, reduce overheads and costs and also give greater security against imports and other impacts.

All players are to be commended for the way these discussions have matured to this level and enable this initiative to proceed.  Many of our members are small by Australian standards and are excited to have a world standard facility to enhance their prospects.

We are also pleased that the $5 million plus budgeted figure is well within our realms to service.  This opportunity has been applauded widely, particularly in marketing and industry circles and we hope that it will enhance the profile of this area as a recognized rural productive region.

Carbon Emissions

Carbon emissions, trading and sequestration are hot topics of our time along with global warming. The Co-op is undertaking an exercise to review the sustainability of the business and the industry in the Adelaide Hills Region. This will include improvements to current processes, including compliance, to ensure that sustainability criteria is achieved and adhered to. We believe that this may lead to exciting marketing opportunities. Watch this space!

Focus on Community Members

This community has a varied mix of people and I will continue to highlight some in my newsletter. The two I have chosen for you this time are:

Warren Murdoch

The efforts of people like Warren Murdoch have contributed enormously to our community. The thirty-five Lenswood school students he coached had success in the Hills Primary Schools Lawn Bowls Competition last season. In the State Primary Schools Competition (SAPSASA) they received two Silvers in the singles and a Bronze in the triples. Two are in the under 18 State Development Squad - Salutations to you all for doing so well.

Warren has found this most rewarding as he certainly has had a breat interest and done so well himself in lawn bowls. His efforts leave a lasting legacy on our community as a building contractor, businessman, long term local Government councilor, CFS brigade secretary and deputy Group Captain and sportsman.

Brian Harris

It's Show time and a special time for many, but particularly for one. Brian Harris has been meticulously entering his apples with great success since the mid 1970's. He missed a few years in the mid nineties but has been entering again since 1997. His efforts have greatly enhanced the apple and pear Show displays as a visit to the stand would testify.

The Apple and Pear Association supported the "Wearable Blooms" Group which has been one of the shows highlights this year.

Rainfall

Last year at this time I expressed satisfaction at the good rainfall to the end of August - the rainfall then abruptly stopped!!!

Whilst nearly all dams are full in our region and the ground soaked, we do have high hopes along with our agricultural friends for a kinder season going forward.

I also note that the longer term temperature average of 12.3C increased by 1.8C to 14.1C this year. Also predictions are being made of a warmer summer to follow???

Orchard Development Program (ODP)

Following on from our successful first ODP, our second effort has also yielded an excellent result.

For the second year in a row, the ODP resulted in the funding of 34,000 trees for member growers, ensuring that growers are keeping up with the preferred varieties.

We aim to be able to continue this program for many years.
